Description:

Request a Grant Writer

Grants of $8,400 per year to USA PhDs affiliated with a higher education institution for collaborative research projects in the field of mathematics. Funds are intended to support travel and related expenditures associated with the collaborative work between mathematics scholars.

Awards will be based on the quality and significance of the applicant’s previous research and on the likely impact the collaboration grant will have on future research, both for the applicant and the applicant’s graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows. Other criteria for awards include the applicant’s current and recent Ph.D. students, and the applicant’s travel goals and general research activity.

The goal of the program is to substantially increase collaborative contacts between accomplished, active mathematicians in the United States, who do not otherwise have access to funding that allows support for travel and visitors.

Allowable Expenses:
1. Collaboration, travel and research funds for the awardee (up to $6,000 per year):

Eligible expenses in this category are:
- Scientific travel by the awardee, the awardee’s graduate and Ph.D. students and other members of the awardee’s department (at the sole discretion of the awardee) per the institution’s travel policies — International travel is permitted. Parking, hotel, taxi, registration and other related travel and conference costs are allowable.
- The expense of scientific visits (including meals) to the awardee’s home institution by the awardee’s collaborators and other scientific visitors of interest to the awardee per the institution’s travel policies — International travel is permitted, and there are no restrictions on airline carriers. An honorarium for speakers is allowed.
- Up to $1,500 per year in other research expenses, such as computers, computer support, publication expenses, stationery, supplies, books and membership fees to professional organizations.

2. Discretionary funds for the awardee’s department (up to $1,000 per year):

Eligible expenses in this category include support for departmental colloquia and seminars, as well as refreshments and other research-related amenities. Support for student orientations, prospective student visits and other departmental activities are allowed. Funds may also be used to subsidize meals for faculty, students and visitors. In addition, these funds may be used to help pay for furniture and research infrastructure, such as copiers, computer servers and computer support. Funds should be expended at the discretion of the department chair.

An amount of up to 20 percent ($1,400) per year is awarded for indirect costs.
